Teaching and Learning Mathematics

David Kirkby

David worked for 10 years as a full-time teacher, then 20 years as senior lecturer in Mathematics Education at Sheffield Hallam University, England. He is now a freelance consultant, adviser and provider of in-service training. He has spoken at numerous conferences both in the UK and internationally, and has provided in-service training at approximately 60 international schools throughout the world. He is author of more than 200 books about the teaching of mathematics for children, teachers and parents, including the Primary Mathematics Scheme ‘Abacus’, which is the most widely used programme in the UK.

This is a two-day course designed to consider a range of issues related to the teaching and learning of mathematics by children aged 5 – 12. Teachers attending will be presented with a range of practical classroom ideas to aid their children’s development. The following outline gives an indication of the different aspects of the course.

• Mental mathematics

• Investigative approaches to learning

• The use of mathematical games
